Hedge funds up 1.43% in February

Hedge funds gained in value in February, new figures have revealed, in news which could be of interest to private banking customers.

According to the latest Hennessee Hedge Fund Index, investment vehicles of this type advanced 1.43 per cent in the second month of the year, compared with 3.2 per cent for the Standard & Poor's 500.

Commenting on the figures, Hennessee Group co-founder Charles Gradante said: "Global equity markets posted gains for February despite heightened volatility due to civil unrest in the Middle East and North Africa.

"Managers benefited from modest net long exposure, but shorts and hedges detracted from performance."

Mr Gradante went on to state that the outlook among fund managers is positive, but they are wary of rising oil prices.

A recent study by Lloyds TSB revealed precious metals were the top performing assets in 2010, with silver in particular continuing to make significant price gains.
