Bestinvest: Agriculture and water the two biggest investment trends

Agriculture and water are going to be two of the biggest investment trends emerging over the next decade, according to an investment company.

Bestinvest has said that investors interested in alternative investments should consider investing in agriculture and soft commodities because the massive global population spike – from six to nine billion in the next 40 years – is going to put an even greater demand on natural resources.

Adrian Lowcock, a senior investment adviser at Bestinvest, explained that agriculture could be an area of investment where investors could compare long-term trends as an alternative asset.

"Along with that you have other assets, such as water. Water is going to be a big theme, because with the growing population size, water is going to become a valuable commodity itself," he said.

"Countries like China have large populations but very low fresh water supply. Those are two big areas that I would focus on as a long-term trend."

In the shorter-term, wine was seen as a good investment where exceptional demand from China was driving up prices.

Bestinvest is an investment advisory business which looks after more than £4 billion of client assets for 50,000 clients.
