Manchester to benefit from fresh government investment

Manchester looks set to be one of the biggest winners of the chancellor's newly-announced policy of stepping up investment in science and technology.

At the 2011 Conservative Party Conference, which is being held in Manchester, George Osborne outlined his plans to pump hundreds of millions of pounds into the sector in a bid to further boost the UK's reputation for innovation and thereby generate more investment.

Notably, the north-west of England city will be getting around £200 million worth of government funding, with much of this going towards the development of a special research hub at the University of Manchester which will be used to spawn new businesses and attract global companies to the region.

"Tomorrow's world is being shaped here in Manchester," Mr Osborne told the conference.

"Manchester, the first City of the Industrial Revolution. The city where the first computer was built. Where Rutherford split the atom."

At the same time, the government is also set to invest heavily in boosting the UK's computing capabilities, again with the aim of attracting private wealth investment in the country.  ADNFCR-2318-ID-800747479-ADNFCR
