Charity managers 'should be involved with fundraising'

Senior managers at charities should be involved in fundraising efforts, it has been claimed.

With both commercial and private investors increasingly looking to put private wealth into socially responsible organisations, there is currently a big opportunity for the voluntary sector.

Speaking at an event held by the Cass Business School, Shelter chief executive said that many boards and chief executives in the sector still see fundraising as a "dirty secret".

He was quoted by Third Sector as saying that new platforms for fundraising, such as social media, must also be carefully considered.

"When you ask an organisation what they are doing with social media, they say: 'We're on Facebook and our chief executive is on Twitter' - that is not a strategy."

Beyond fundraising, another avenue open to charities for raising money is utilise private banking services. There are an increasing number of socially responsible investment opportunities available, offering social as well as financial returns.
