Private investors 'targeting new markets'

A new report from Barclays has indicated that emerging markets have become increasingly popular with UK-based private investors in 2009.

The publication states that exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are often the investment vehicle of choice for people entering such markets, with Brazil and China currently receiving the most exposure.

According to Barclays, ETF trading has increased by 156 per cent year on year and the overall value of ETF holdings is 130 per cent higher than it was in August 2008.

’ETFs enable clients to get into a number of overseas markets or stocks through one investment, which is particularly useful when you are less familiar with a market but understand the opportunity,’ explained head of Barclays Stockbrokers Des Byrne.

He said that emerging markets investors value the ’liquidity, transparency and overall simplicity’ of ETF trading.

Brazilian finance minister Guido Mantega said on Saturday (October 3rd) that Rio de Janeiro’s hosting of the Olympic Games in 2016 will attract more foreign investors to the country.
