Over-50s 'feeling positive about investments'

A significant number of older investors with savings feel optimistic about their future prospects on the stockmarket, new research has indicated.

Figures published by Fidelity International show that 54 per cent of over-50s with more than £10,000 put away in Isas now have a positive outlook on stocks and shares.

According to the firm, the recent increase in the Isa allowance for people in the over-50 age group may have prompted many to consider fresh stockmarket investments.

’After a turbulent 18 months, our research indicates that the over-50s are now feeling far more positive towards the stockmarket,’ said Rob Fisher, head of UK personal investments at Fidelity International.

The survey also found that 21 per cent of over-50s believe that with interest rates frozen at 0.5 per cent, the stockmarket is currently their best hope of securing a decent return on their money.

However, research published by Prudential last month stated that one in four people were ruling out equity investments due to a lack of confidence in the stockmarket.
