Wine named best alternative investment of the decade

Fine wine has been the best-performing alternative investment category of the last ten years, according to the Guardian.

In a review of the alternative investment market since 2000, the newspaper stated that the returns from some French vintages have ’far outstripped equities, gold and property’.

The Liv-ex Fine Wine Investables Index shows that fine Bordeaux reds achieved a return on investment of 138 per cent between December 1999 and October this year.

Liv-ex director James Miles told the newspaper that there is currently a ’compelling’ case for investing in fine wine.

He noted that limited supply, with some high-quality estates reducing production in recent years, has combined with growing demand from new markets such as Asia to push prices up.

’Wine has also been a useful tool for portfolio diversification, with a history of high returns, low volatility and negligible correlation to mainstream assets,’ Mr Miles added.

The Live-ex index dates back to January 1988 and tracks the price of Bordeaux reds from 24 leading chateaux.
