Net worth check 'could be surprising'

People doing investment, retirement or estate planning may get a pleasant surprise when calculating their net worth, it has been suggested.

Donald Hamburg, an estate lawyer based in New York City, told Forbes that the recent financial turmoil has led many people to underestimate the net value of their assets.

He explained: ’Clients say, ’The Dow Jones has done my estate planning for me’.’

When conducting a net worth check, people are reminded to consider that the proceeds of life insurance policies make up part of their estate.

Forbes also said that the exercise is a good chance for individuals to create an updated list of their holdings.

The publication added that putting off basic financial planning is a bad idea because it is important for people to ensure loved ones will be catered for if they become incapacitated or die.

Meanwhile, writing in the Montgomery Advertiser, sector commentator John Norris recently advised people they should always be on the lookout for alternative investment opportunities.
