NAPF calls for 'more communication' over pension benefits

The government must do more to convince private sector employees of the benefits of pensions, it has been claimed.

According to the National Association of Pension Funds (NAPF), the government is still dragging its feet in terms of convincing people of the benefits of saving for their retirement.

NAPF spokesperson Mark Brooks said that many employers are encouraging workers to put money aside for retirement, but the profile of the issue could still be raised significantly.

’We need more communication, especially from the government and others, about the benefits of saving for retirement,’ he commented.

’The point we always make is that saving for your old age is essential if you want a comfortable retirement.’

A recent survey by the NAPF found that 23 per cent of defined-benefit pension schemes remain open to new members, compared with 28 per cent a year ago.

Meanwhile, a study from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development found that the proportion of people aged 55 and above who are planning to work beyond the state pension age has increased to 71 per cent.
