Expert predicts lower than expected unemployment

Unemployment levels throughout 2010 and 2011 could be lower than many people are expecting, one expert has claimed.

Chief executive of Work Wise UK Phil Flaxton said that while he agrees that the number of individuals without a job will increase during this timeframe, it is unlikely to be as bad as previously thought.

Commenting on a recent report by the Confederation of British Industry that predicted those without work to hit 2.8 million in 2010, he said that this is lower than many have been estimating.

He added: ’Unemployment has been very low over the last decade and 2.8 million is not as high a figure as [we have seen]’

According to Mr Flaxton, it is felt in many quarters that the figure is unlikely to hit three million, which contrasts with forecasts from the beginning of this year.

Recent data from the Office for National Statistics showed the quarterly increase for unemployment displayed in the latest three-month period was the smallest since early 2008.
