Unemployment and jobless claimants dip
Both unemployment and the number of people calming jobless benefits have declined, according to new figures.
Latest data from the Office for National Statistics has revealed the proportion of the population without a job fell by 33,000 in the three months to January when compared to data from the previous quarter, taking the total to 2.449 million and keeping the jobless rate at 7.8 per cent.
And there was a greater-than-expected dip in the number of Britons claiming unemployment benefits, which dropped to 32,300 last month.
According to Reuters, analysts had anticipated a rise of 8,000.
The news helped raise the value of sterling and the news agency noted that it may give the Labour Party a boost ahead of the upcoming general election.
Commenting on the results, Mark Bolsom of Travelex stated: ’The unexpected fall in the claimant count figure is good news. It will certainly offer the government some much needed relief after yesterday’s challenges from the European Commission.’
