Investment Management

We have specifically designed our business around our understanding of what our clients are looking for and need today.

We understand it is our responsibility to protect your wealth and find prudent ways in which to grow it in order to achieve your objectives. Each client is allocated a dedicated portfolio manager and we construct bespoke portfolios to suit your objectives. Our starting point is to get to know you and to fully understand your interests, aspirations and attitude to risk. We follow a five-step process to create your portfolio.

Creating Your Portfolio

We discuss at length what you want to achieve to ensure that your investment objectives are delivered. Be they driven by income, a specific tax requirement or ethical concerns, we seek to understand your objectives within the context of the wider picture, applying a disciplined risk profiling framework to identify opportunities and to move forward.

This is driven by two things: first, your requirements as outlined in your objectives, and second, by our current investment views. We believe that it takes patience and discipline to implement an effective long-term investment strategy, so we use an objective process to evaluate investment opportunities.

In identifying and evaluating opportunities, we seek to understand how financial markets behave by observing asset valuations, price momentum, investor sentiment and economic climate as indicators of future investment performance.

Broadly, we offer two main investment management services: discretionary and advisory.

Discretionary services

Discretionary investment management services are designed for clients who would prefer to outsource the management of their investments to our highly experienced portfolio management team.

There are three ways in which clients access our team’s investment philosophy and process:

The first is a portfolio made up of equities, bonds, alternative assets and cash, accessed through third party funds.

The second is a portfolio directly invested in stocks and shares.

The third is a portfolio comprised of one or more of our range of multi-asset class and sector funds.  This can offer you a tax-efficient and cost-effective way of accessing Kleinwort Benson’s asset allocation models.

All options are carefully selected for you in accordance with your personal objectives and attitude to risk.

Advisory service

Our Advisory Service is designed for more experienced, financially sophisticated clients who prefer to manage their own portfolio of investments. Within this service we identify and put forward new investment opportunities, based on our proprietary research, that we believe best match an investor’s profile. On an ongoing basis, our team of experts is on hand to offer advice and perspectives to help you make the most informed investment decisions. All advisory clients receive a copy of our quarterly investment guide, Global Investment Opportunities.

The portfolio manager manages risk on a daily basis by looking at what is happening in the markets and checking that your portfolio is still correctly positioned to meet your objectives. In addition, our risk team review your portfolio against objectives, peer groups and benchmarks to identify any potential risk that needs to be addressed. This team operates separately from the portfolio management function, providing independent oversight and accountability.

Quarterly, half-yearly or annual meetings can be combined with individual or conference phone calls. We contact you when we make major changes to your portfolio to keep you informed of how our house views are evolving and how this is being expressed in your portfolio. Equally, we re-evaluate your objectives with you on an ongoing basis to ensure that we continue to deliver on your objectives.

We produce a range of written materials setting out our views and current positions, such as our quarterly Market Pulse and monthly CIO Blog. We also host a number of client events including CIO Lunches, Breakfast Briefings and Entrepreneurs’ Forums.

The Kleinwort Benson fund range comprises a variety of investment strategies designed to suit investors with different objectives and attitudes to investment risk, which is categorised as low, medium and high.

We manage all of the funds with tight control on investment risk, according to the fund’s elected risk profile. All fees are clear and transparent with annual management charges included in the prices. The funds are easy to buy and sell as there is no bid offer spread – they all have single prices. Dealing is weekly so you can switch between funds if your objectives or circumstances change.
